The Breed Mafia - Destroyers.

Quote from K9 Magazine:

"In every breed in this shallow world of exhibition there is always the ‘breed mafia’. Usually a group of elderly women (with the occasional male) that is steadfast in its view even when wrong, they are self proclaimed experts in nothing who draw in the stupidly dazed owners of tomorrow with a coven like chant of “we are the breed , there is nothing anyone can teach us about this breed.”
Unfortunately all this does is create disharmony, damages dogs and stagnates gene pools to such a degree that health crisis are inevitable. The showing of any dog should be judged fairly and with vigour , the winner of today will become the sire or dam of the future, moreso when its being performed by the breed mafia who have very little time for newcomers unless of course those newcomers are as uneducated and care as little about the future of a breed as they do".

We can surely see this pattern in our own breed, the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Too often, the puppy millers become the judges and stewards of the breed, running the shows and calling the shots.  Too often, their friends and associates are taking top prizes with dogs that should be de-sexed to prevent them from fouling the gene pool further.  And far too often, those with really good dogs walk away from such disgraceful conduct, taking their fine dogs with them.

Such destroyers of the breed care not for the future of the breed but only for ticket sales at the gates and 'bums on seats'.  The more prolific the puppy miller, the better they are received as their buyers will most surely come to the shows with the 'fine example' they (in their dozens) have been duped into buying.

When the BBC boycotted Crufts after Jemima Harrison's film "Pedigree Dogs Exposed" was aired, the spotlight was on breeders, judges and kennel clubs the world over.

K9 goes on to report:

"Pedigree Dogs Exposed, which aired on BBC One last August to an audience of four million, highlighted health and welfare problems in pedigree dogs and led to the BBC suspending its coverage of Crufts after more than 40 years. The programme also led to the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and the PDSA pulling out of Crufts and three major reviews of dog-breeding in the UK. Soon after the broadcast, and in the face of continued pressure, the Kennel Club announced a raft of changes, including the revision of many breed standards and the banning of mother-to-son, father-to-daughter and sister-to-brother matings".

“Jemima’s commitment ensured the programme was completed, often in the face of abuse from hostile individuals and groups, and the impact was enormous, igniting a ground-breaking debate about pedigree dog welfare,” says RSPCA Chief Executive Mark Watts.

Jemima took the RSPCA's top award for her work.

The Breed Mafia of the APBT has similarly brought about a number of problems in our breed with breeding for colour, size and numbers - all in the interests of making a buck, narcissistically filling the registry with their kennel names, and selling tickets at the gate.

We now see kennels inbreeding for colour, selecting for massive heads, cross-breeding for size (anything over 70lb is NOT a Pit Bull).

Such practices have seen what was once the toughest little hybrid ever bred now needing ceasarians, surgery for entropian, hip and elbow dysplasia, major malocclusion, deafness, vision defects etc.

Undiscerning buyers are all that is required to ensure the demise of our healthy gene pool and the end of the American Pit Bull Terrier as we knew it.

Genuine Breed Devotees aim to leave the breed better than when they found it.  Buy your dogs from these breeders and you will being doing your part to leave the breed better than when you found it.
