Pig Dogs or Pit Bulls?
"I'm not scared of dogs, just pitbulls. Other dogs are fine."
The Herald reports:
Owner of dogs to appear in court over attack
10:59AM Thursday July 24, 2008
The man who owned four pig dogs which savaged a teenager in the Waikato last week has been charged by police.
The 37-year-old Waitoa man was served with a summons yesterday to appear in court after his four pitbull-greyhound cross dogs attacked the 13-year-old as he rode his bike.
He was bitten more than 100 times, received more than 300 stitches and spent five days in Waikato Hospital. The dogs were destroyed soon after the attack.
The victim later thanked Jeanne Robinson - former All Black Keith Robinson's wife - and two other women who saved him from the dogs.
He said he just wanted to get better and get back to school and see his friends.
"I've got a little foxy dog at home so I'm going to be fine with dogs in the future," he said in a statement.
"I'm not scared of dogs, just pitbulls, other dogs are fine".
Well, actually, I have spoken to Stewart Witeri - long-time pig hunter, owner and breeder of these Pig Dogs - myself. These dogs are English Bull Terrier x Cattledogs. Not an ounce of American Pit Bull Terrier in them. Or Greyhound for that matter.
Many thanks to Stewart for making contact with the APBTA Inc. so that we could bring you the truth. Our thoughts are with Stewart - and this child who, along with his family, friends, and the rest of New Zealand will go on to believe that he was mauled by pit bulls.
Shame on the media - again.
