Why a crate?

 

Dogs are genetically hard wired to be den animals. A den is a small safe defined space. Dogs feel instinctively safe in a den and it is a place they instinctively avoid soiling. These two instincts make crate training, done in the right way, an effective and kind way to train your new furry family member. Two other important aspects of providing a crate for your pet are the safety it affords them and the damage that is prevented to your home!

 

Benefits of crate training your new puppy:

 

·           A crate will provide your puppy with his own personal space. It will become his territory, his safe haven and often his bed. Providing him with such a space will prevent him trying to claim your whole house as his own territory! Giving him a place he can go to when he is scared helps to relieve anxiety and stress.

 

·          But a crate also gives YOU some space and a break. Single dogs tend to be a bit clingier with their owners and some everyday chores and activities can be very difficult with a furry friend on your heels! Crating your puppy for a short while will give you some free time and give him a secure place to rest.

 

·          Crate training helps with house breaking! Even young puppies prefer not to soil areas where they sleep or are enclosed. Crating your dog when you’re not watching him will help prevent accidents and help him to realise that indoors is not the place to relieve himself!

 

·          If your pet suffers from separation anxiety crate training can help. One of the causes of anxiety could simply be being alone in an open area - puppies will instinctively think they have been left behind by their pack and bark to help you find them until they recognise their crate as their den.
