Ken Moran & the NZAPBT Club

Because of the lack of accountability and irresponsibility of the owner of the NZAPBT Registry, Ken Moran (who is now telling people who call him for advice or papers that pedigrees are a "waste of time") the fate of the American Pit Bull Terrier in New Zealand is all but sealed.

The ill-bred and crossbred look-alikes, sold cheaply to all comers, are the dogs bringing what was once America's pride into such serious disrepute that the general public the world over are terrified of the breed, and it is now almost impossible to find the genuine article or to place puppies in safe and responsible hands in this country.

When the breed first came to this country, a registry was set up to track the bloodlines.  This was then sold to Ken Moran, who abused the trust placed in him to keep the registry properly by admitting only purebred dogs and providing paperwork only for those dogs that truly qualify to be called American Pit Bull Terrier.  If Ken deemed that your dog looked enough like an APBT, even if it was only five weeks old, he supplied 'pedigree' certificates for a fee.  His motto: "If it looks like a Pit Bull, it's a Pit Bull".

View Proof

Deliberately misleading buyers by providing 'pedigree' certification for dogs of unknown lineage is appalling enough but to aid and abet others in this deception beggars belief.  In such a position of trust, fully aware of the plight of the Pit Bull Terrier, fully aware of the true nature of the genuine Pit Bull Terrier, to allow the ruination of the breed for personal gain is a despicable act of betrayal.

An Issue of Public Safety

Those buyers who have researched the breed before purchase will have no doubt read such books as Richard Stratton's "The Truth About The American Pit Bull Terrier", Diane Jessup's "The Working Pit Bull" or Sacramento attorney Dawn Capp's "American Pit Bull Terriers: The Truth Behind One of America's Most Popular Breeds".

These authors provide compelling evidence that the APBT is totally undeserving of it's evil reputation.  On the contrary, this breed has arguably the best temperament available in a family dog as a direct result of it's fighting history.  See pit RulesBut that is only assuming that the dog you buy has come from a professional breeder who has lived up to their responsibility of culling for temperament and maintaining the integrity of the bloodlines.

Sadly, due to Ken's reprehensible behaviour, these days such dogs are hard to find and more and more often we are seeing example's of bizarre and vicious behaviour attributed to this breed incorrectly.

Buyers are duped by the so-called 'pedigree' paperwork into taking home ill-bred and cross-bred look-alikes from puppy mills.  These are the buyers who unwittingly take home a ticking time bomb with teeth to their children, neighbours, and anyone else who may come into contact with it.

Thanks to the puppy millers the APBT can be bought today for next to nothing, and having been demonised by the media the world over, attract the worst kind of owners.  It is the ill-bred, poorly socialised and mis-handled animals which are making the headlines and convincing the general public of the need to cull their kind.  Nothing could be further from the truth or less fair.

The recently formed American Pit Bull Terrier Association provides a free service to Pit Bull owners/breeders who wish to verify their paperwork and provides 6 generation papers to those dogs verified as genuine at no charge.
